Some real progress over the last months including outstanding growth from my newly purchased Chilli Grow system which has already produced a 6 inch chilli (and still growing).

As I has suspected the wife had infiltrated my chilli seedlings with some normal peppers, and now these seem to be the ones growing well much to my annoyance!  I’ve picked one as it was purple and I had a crazy theory that I had somehow cross pollunated two varieties to make a super hot chilli that looked like a purple pepper – but alas it was a common pepper, though still a nice colour

The rest of the crop are coming along nicely, I’ve got rid of a few weedy ones and cropped some leafage off some to try and direct the growth to the fruits.

I’ve got a few more pics but having some problems uploading, may have to put them on a separate post.

Update on my chillis – all now re-potted except for one – but have run out of space in the porch so have had to strategically hide them all over the house – in the kitchen, behind curtains and even outside!  A  bit optimistic trying to grow 58 chilli plants without a greenhouse methinks!

They are looking ok, thanks to the scorching few days we’ve had, and I’ve even spotted what looks like the begining of a flower on a couple so happy days!

Heres’s a few shots of their progress, sorry cannot name them yet due to my incompetent labelling process (ie not labelling them).  The last pic is one I’ve banished to the garden – seems to be doing ok:

I’m intending posting regular updates and pics of my chilli growing season, which hopefully will be entertaining, but should also serve as a useful guide forfuture seasons, and help identify any problems and how these are overcome.

The first learning point I have taken on board is I haven’t labelled my chillis, which I never do every year, but as I’m growing quite a few different species this year, I really should have done.

Hopefully I can identify them once the fruit start appearing.

To complicate matters, the missus has planted some peppers and tomatoes and the pots are all a bit mixed up so will have to identify these and segregate asap!

Another set of leaves on the Aji Hot chillis .

Apart from the wind a few days ago that blew out some windows of the greenhouse, the weather here has been great plenty of sun and it is doing wonders for the plants. The over wintered Tepins are also doing great in the greenhouse and the Tepin that got a bit wind burnt sitting in the open window has threw out more leaves to replace the shrivelled ones .

I started off this years crop in February and all the seedlings went into my growbox that I made just to give them enough light until the days start getting longer.

Although I have a propagator I started these and some others, off on damp kitchen roll and then into a plastic bag then on top of a warm radiator ! worked quite well but I slipped up when I potted them on, I should have kept some bottom heat on I think as most of them perished ! I am in the process of building a growbox around my home built propagator .

Well we are six to seven weeks into to our first season of attempting to grow a variety of Chillies. So far all seems to be going well, with almost every seed I planted germinated and clambering for the early spring sunshine.

Unfortunately we don’t have a garden let alone a spacious greenhouse. So we are having to rely on fairly sunny window sills which I have racked out to be able to stack our Chilli plants and increase the capacity of plants we can grow!

We have always had a love of hot and spicy food and as the years have passed our pallet has found a fondness for increasingly firery flavours to our cooking. But it was only this year that I had a mini epiphany and thought rather than repeatedly buying Chillies, why not grow them!??
